#Kenya and #Tanzania #Safari

In June/July 2023, I had the opportunity to take a trip to #Kenya and #Tanzania. I can honestly say it was a fantastic trip and one of my favorites so far!

We started out landing in Kenya and going to the Giraffe Centre in Kenya (https://www.giraffecentre.org/) where we got to feed the giraffe's. If you have the chance and go to Kenya, I highly recommend a visit.

After that, we were on our way to #Masaimara to start our safari adventure! We stayed in a game camp just outside Masai Mara game preserve. Now, when you think of camping you think tent and very primitive.....it was the exact opposite.

Yes, there were tents, but not ordinary tents. We were doing the #glamping thing and it was a really cool experience. The rooms are soft sided very large tents, with electricity, full functioning bathroom facilities and comfy furniture. We had a deck on ours as most are off the ground. The camp had a wonderful restaurant and bar that had a large food buffet. At night it is pitch black and you need flashlights to walk back to your tent. The camp also had an inground pool for their guests.

On our first full day of safari in the Masai Mara game preserve we got to see all of the animals you would expect and some that I had no idea even existed. We saw lions, hippos, giraffes, wildebeest, crocodiles, birds of all shapes and colors. We even saw baby elephants who were so new that they didn't even have tusks yet!

Each safari day usually runs from around 7am to 7pm with a packed lunch. Now, I know what you're thinking....oh great snack food. It was way different. We had fantastic sandwiches, chips, cookies, fruit, chocolate bars, juice and water in our boxes. You didn't go hungry on the game trail.

We spent 3 full days in the Mara on game trails. Each day was something new and different. Each day we saw animals interacting with each other and in some instances, feeding (too gross for pictures) TIP - there are NO bathrooms on the game trail.....

Once our time in Kenya was finished, we boarded our short flight to Mt. Kilimanjaro airport to begin the Tanzania portion of our trip. In Tanzania, we would stay in several different places because the tour was much different than Kenya.

Our first night we stayed at a lodge in Arusha since our flight got in very late. We were just in time for dinner. Bright and early the next day, we headed out to the #Ngorongoro crater. The drive was very long going from Arusha to the crater. We stayed at a hotel right on the edge of the crater for the night. We had a fantastic view of the crater in the morning and a water buck just outside our room!

The next morning we were off to do a safari in the crater. We saw the elusive black rhino from a distance, through binoculars and he was a beautiful animal. We saw more lions, elephants, dickdicks and my new favorite bird the Secretary Bird (they are snake eaters). Herds of zebra and just about every animal you can think that you would see on safari.

After a restful night in the hotel, we were off to the Serengeti the next morning. Our drive through the Serengeti was beautiful. Miles and miles as far as the eye could see there were animals. We drove through the #Serengeti to our camp for the next 2 nights.

Each day in the Serengeti was an adventure. We saw the usual animals you would see but we also got to see the very hard to find leopard. She was up in a tree with her kill and she was absolutely stunning!

We were lucky enough to get up close and personal with a couple of cheetah's that were sunning on some rocks.

After 2 glorious nights and 3 full days on the game trail in the Serengeti it was time to say goodbye. We went back to Arusha for the night and our flight onward to Zanzibar the next day where we relaxed in the sun before going onto Egypt for a week (story to follow).

If you ever have the chance to go on safari, DO IT! It was an experience you won't ever forget and will want to do again.

You are welcome to join us this year in July when we go again to see the Great Migration! This is where over 2,000,000 wildebeest, zebra and warthogs migrate through the Serengeti to Kenya.
